Vida’s Adventure the week ~ Abu Dhabi!

The 2019 Special Olympics World Games are being held in Abu Dhabi this week. This organization was founded in 1990, dedicated to serving athletes with intellectual disabilities through sport competitions.

Starting today you can watch the events on ESPN and while you are cheering on the competitors you will also be treated to views of this striking area. You might even think about traveling to Abu Dhabi for your next adventure!  I have some fun facts about this interesting area to get you interested.

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven Emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the UAE.  This is the emirate’s heritage heartland and one of the world’s oldest inhabited settlements. Abu Dhabi is proud to be a place known for the friendliness and hospitality of its people, the vision of its leadership, and its recognition for the need of a more inclusive and hopeful world.

It is a vibrant emirate rich with history and heritage which is reflected in the variety of activities available both on land and at sea. Abu Dhabi’s history stretches back as far as 7,000 years – the Oasis city of Al Ain is the Abu Dhabi’s heritage heartland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Abu Dhabi is a diverse emirate with desert oasis, mountains, fabulous beaches crystal clear waters, and an ancient heritage within a modern cosmopolitan city. It is a vibrant area rich with history and heritage which is reflected in the variety of activities available both on land and at sea.

Although Abu Dhabi is in constantly transforming the city’s skyline with amazing architectural features; its culture is firmly rooted in the Arab region’s Islamic traditions and serves as an example of commitment to tolerance and hospitality.

Getting to Abu Dhabi ~ To get there you will fly into Abu Dhabi.  Etihad Airlines has non-stop flights from JFK daily. The cost is about $1,500.00 per person round trip. Turkish Airlines has some of the best rates with one connection in Istanbul for about $900.00 per person round trip.

Their currency is the Dirham. US dollar conversion is $1.00 to 3.75 Dirham (AED)

 

Things to see and do:

If you want to get a taste of Bedouin life take a desert adventure.  An expert guide will drive you in a 4X4 into the dune filled desert. Visit a camel farm and get to ride one of the “ships of the desert”. Try your skills with sandboarding or get a temporary henna tattoo.  Finish the day with a delicious barbecue dinner and belly dancing show around a campfire under the desert stars.

Ferrari World is a Ferrari branded theme park for all ages. There are over 20 rides including the worlds highest roller-coaster loop with speeds up to 95 miles an hour.

Yas Waterworld is a huge park with 40 rides including twisting turning slides, fountains

Visiting the largest mosque in the UAE is a must. Made of marble and decorated with fold and precious stones and is surrounded by gorgeous pools, this is a wonder to see. The prayer hall has the largest carpet in the world.  Visitor must dress modestly, no shorts for men and women can only expose hands, face and feet.  Check out their website Mosque Manners to see what is and isn’t allowed.

Where to stay:

The Jumeirah At Etihad Tower ~ this 5-star hotel sets the standard for luxury.  The 5 dramatic towers standout in the landscape of the city. There are 3 outdoor pools, you will also find 13 restaurants and bars. The Talise Spa that is an oasis of calm with a full menu of spa services as well as exercise classes and DNA health and wellness center.  You could stay here for a week for only $1,600.00 with taxes.

Khalidiya Palace Ryaharr ~ Another 5-star resort but this caters to families. They are on a private beach and one of the largest pools in the city. There is a Kid’s Camp, full service spa and 5 restaurants.  This would be only $915.00 for the week!

Radisson Blu Cornish ~ Yet another 5-star resort. This has beautiful pool area over looking the prime private beach where you can jet ski windsurf.  You will find a Kid’s Club and play ground, full service spa and 5 restaurants.  This is $980.00 for a week!

Novotel Abu Dhabi Gate ~ This is a mid-level 4-star hotel on the water with a nice pool area with a bar. They have 3 restaurants, 2 bars including a Hookah lounge.  This would be only $600.00 for a week!
